Unfortunately, if you have an automatic irrigation system and it goes neglected during freezing weather you could create an undesired winter wonderland of your own. Worse, you could be spending the holidays with no water if a major disaster occurs. The past two years have seen several occurrences of freezing temperatures low enough to cause damage. So how does one avoid the ‘Sprinkler Grinch’?

A few simple steps can greatly increase your chances of making it to Spring unscathed:

1. CHECK FOR LEAKS: Any leak that manifests itself during warmer weather will be likely to cause a real problem once the temperatures start dropping. Try to isolate and repair any small drips or boggy areas before bad weather comes. This goes for outdoor hose faucets too.

2. TURN IT OFF: It sounds simple but irrigation systems have become so automated that we often forget they’re scheduled to run. Many systems can be completely turned off by simply going into the garage and turning the wheel on the controller to the ‘OFF’ position. Most irrigation systems have an emergency shutoff in the form of a manual valve. Look near the water meter in your front yard; it is often located inside a round green valve box that is flush with the turf.

3. PROTECT EXPOSED PIPES: Some irrigation systems have components that are above-ground and exposed to the elements. Look near your house (on one side or the other, or in a flower bed) for two vertically-oriented white pipes feeding a brass bonnet. This is called a ‘vacuum breaker’. A frozen vacuum breaker is the #1 cause of irrigation-related freezing emergencies. You need to turn the manual valves off (if it has any), drain the test ports (if it has any) and wrap all exposed components with foam. Be careful not to obstruct the air vent because it’s unsafe and illegal to do so. Pre-manufactured foam wrap and accompanying tape can be purchased inexpensively at any local irrigation supply house or the do-it-yourself mega stores.

In northern states ‘winterizing’ means using an air-compressor to blow all the water out of the pipes but that’s simply not necessary in the Brazos Valley. For under $100 you can hire an irrigation professional who will properly test, drain and wrap the exposed components. Then in the spring they can ‘start-up’ your system by performing the same tasks in reverse. Be sure to use a licensed professional because it is illegal to service an irrigation system in Texas without proper licensing.

Winter weather doesn’t need to be a source of panic if you’re prepared in advance!
